Our First Apple Crop

One of the first things we did when we moved into Mayfair Farm was lay out an orchard.  The raspberries produced the following year and have been stars of the summer line up ever since.  But this year, our first with a real crop, our apples stole the spotlight.  Visitors to the farm who are accustomed to large scale pick your own orchards have to adjust their expectations to an orchard of just 40 trees.  But the apples themselves quickly won converts.  We chose five varieties of apples — Galas, Fujis, Mutsus, Cameos and Enterprise — to give us a long picking season and superb taste fresh from the tree.  And what a pleasure it was to pick apples every day from September til the beginning of November, to enjoy the company of the trees we’ve nurtured for five years.  To have new visitors to the farm, apple pickers, who also discovered everything else we do.  We have a second orchard, we call it the new orchard, that hosts another 40 or so apple trees.  Our spirits buoyed by this year’s success, we’ve decided to plant another 40 trees next year.
